Thinking of joining the army?
It was the 16th September, 2012 that Melbourne's biggest secret was revealed! Melbournian's came out of the closet to publicly celebrate and flaunt their love for Salami! Melbourne's "Salami Army" was outed! They flocked in their hundred's to the inaugural Melbourne Salami Festa to compete for the honour of the 'best homemade salami'. The Festa also demonstrating that the Slow Food Movement is alive and well in Australia.
Home Make It had the privilege of being one of the sponsors of the 2012 Melbourne Salami Festa, and is looking forward to sponsoring again this year. Last year there were 53 entries from all over Australia and over a thousand people attended the event, cueing for hours down High Street, Thorbury (extending around the corner), just for the privilege to taste and vote for their beloved "Salami". And what a festival it was! Live music, food, beer, wine, cheese, pannini and antipasto platters. The age old Italian tradition of curing meats was celebrated and embraced by the young and old, and by people from all nationalities.
The Melbourne Salami Board are keeping tight-lipped at the moment, but have promised a bigger and better Melbourne Salami Festa for 2013. "When will it be?", "Where will it be?", "How big will it be?", "Who will be on the judging panel?", "Who will be the MC?" are just some of the questions being asked. And answers that we don't even know yet! If you would like to follow all the news from the Melbourne Salami Board, check out their new website that has just been launched.
We do know though, that families are starting to plan for their big weekend in June or July when their garages are transformed into meat curing factories. Recipes and methods have been passed down from generation to generation, and families and friends will come together to make their salami, prosciutto, capicolo, cacciatore & more. So if you're one of them, or you're thinking about joining Melbourne's "Salami Army" then take advantage of this week's specials below.

Our "Passata Day" was a huge success! From 14 boxes of lush Roma tomatoes, we made 275 bottles of fresh homemade tomato sauce. It was a lot of hard work, but well worth the effort! It was all hands on deck, young and old. We worked, we ate, we talked, we laughed, we squabbled, we played, we cleaned, we sang and we shared quality family time. And in doing so, we also helped preserve the "Italian way" for another year. You can check out some of the photos on our Facebook Page.
